“Don’t mention it.”
Yakumo sat down on the logs beside Sanzo. “You know,” Yakumo began. “When I see all these kids living their lives so cheerfully, it just makes me forget about all our troubles.” Sanzo said nothing. He looked over to where Goku and Gojyo were. Goku picked up a snowball and threw it at Gojyo. “For all you know, I may have lost it already.” There was an awkward silence between them.
“I can tell you worry for your comrades too,” said Yakumo in an understanding tone.
“Damn monkey!!! What was that for?!” Gojyo retorted in anger and threw a snowball back at Goku.
“For fun!!! Haha!!” Goku whooped in joy.
“Yay!! Snowball fight!!! We wanna play too!!!” The demon children had come and joined in.
Sanzo grunted in response to Yakumo’s question.
“Brother Yaku!! Come and join us in the snowfight!!” said one of the children.
“Alright, I’ll be right over, soldier!” replied Yakumo.
“Eh?” Goku had stumbled upon some tomb-shaped stones on the ground. “These are…?”
“Graves,” said Yakumo. Goku looked at him in disbelief. “Graves of the children who had died.”
Goku looked at the graves quietly. “They were murdered.”
“By who? Humans?” asked Goku. Yakumo said nothing.

That night it snowed heavily.
“Thank goodness we didn’t leave the mountain,” said Goku who was looking outside.
“The storm will be over by tomorrow morning,” said Yakumo smartly. “If you leave by then, you should be able to make it to the bottom of the mountain before the next storm.”
“Well, thank you very much for everything,” said Hakkai.
“Brother Yaku! Brother Yaku!” cried one of the children. He was crying.
“What is it?” said Yakumo in a caring voice.
“It’s Ryo… He’s gone missing!” Yakumo’s eyes widened in shock. “He was acting strangely after since the humans came last night.”
Yakumo said nothing. He grabbed a rifle and prepared to go out. “Stay here!” he told everyone.
“Yakumo, why don’t you let us…” Goku said in mid-sentence.
“NO!! Stay here. Please! I…. I have to do this alone.” And with that, he left the cave. Nobody said anything.
“We’re following,” said Sanzo.
“What?” exclaimed Goku. “But Sanzo, Yakumo said…”
“Something’s wrong.” The four of them left the cave.
“Follow Yakumo’s footprints!” said Sanzo.
“The storm’s covering them!” yelled Gojyo against the noise of the wind.
“Yakumo? But I thought we were going to look for Ryo?” said Goku. Sanzo kept silent.
BANG! A loud gunshot was heard.
“This way!” shouted Sanzo. The four of them run towards the direction of the gunshot. A horrible scene met their eyes and they stopped dead in their tracks.
Two humans were lying on the ground dead. Blood stained the snow. Between them was a demon child with a bullet wound on his back. It was Ryo. Yakumo held the rifle weakly in his hand. The rifle was still smoking. [ But who?...... Goku had asked.]
“It was me,” said Yakumo as he picked up Ryo’s limp form. “It was me. It was me all along. It was me who had killed these children.” Nobody said anything.
“What? No way. You….. You’re kidding, right?” said Goku in disbelief. Yakumo shook his head.
“Time after time again, it was me. I had to kill them…. These children who had gone berserk…..” Yakumo said heavily. “I had to kill them before they completely lose their humanity….. These children went berserk one after another…. Yet….. yet all I could do was watch….” Yakumo started to walk back towards the cave. “One of the humans escaped…. He will be back with reinforcements… Better get back to the cave as soon as possible…”
But the four of them just stood there speechless.
“He’s joking right?” said Goku, his head bent down in agony. “He’s joking right? RIGHT?” Goku was shouting in despair. “TELL ME HE”S JOKING!!” Without a word the four of them slowly trudged toward the cave. “Why? Why? Why does he do all this alone but yet he can smile and pretend to be happy?”
“It was his dream,” said Hakkai. “His dream to live with the children in peace and happiness.”
As Yakumo entered the cave, what he saw could have caused him to faint. A few humans were in the cave with sickles. The blades were stained with blood. [All I could do was watch……… ]
“AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!” a voice screamed in pain. Sanzo and the rest stood outside the cave speechless. Goku’s eyes widened in shock as Gojyo closed his eyes in emotion. They watched as Yakumo threw a man out of the cave. His hands were dripping with blood.
“Please! Spare me!” the man was begging for his life. “Please! I had no choice! If we didn’t attack we would be killed first! Ple- aaarrrrrggghhh!!” the man fell in a heap to the ground.
“WHY???” screamed Goku. Yakumo was growling deeply. His breathing was deep.
Yakumo let out a terrifying roar as he lunged for Goku. Goku was flung back a few metres away. Yakumo turned towards Gojyo.
“What the…. Mmmmmf!!!” Gojyo was slammed towards a tree.
“RRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!” Yakumo headed towards Sanzo.
“Sanzo!” shouted Goku. BANG! Sanzo had shot Yakumo’s shoulder. Yakumo shrieked in pain. Gojyo summoned his scythe and stood together with Goku and Hakkai.
“Careful, Gojyo. Try to keep your distance from him. We might not be a match for his strength,” said Hakkai. Just then, Goku held on to Hakkai’s and Gojyo’s hoods.
“I understand now,” he said. “The burden he carried….. While digging the children’s graves…..” Goku’s voice quavered. “To think that……….. no one will be there to build his grave for him…..”
Hakkai closed his eyes. “We will build his grave for him….” Goku let go.
Yakumo let out another roar as he charged towards the Sanzo party.
[ Brother Yaku! ]
[ Brother Yaku! Come and have a snowball fight with us! ]
[ Sounds fun! I’ll be right over!]
[ Once the storm passes……]
*
Goku laid the last flower onto Yakumo’s grave. The four of them stood in front of it, thinking about the previous night’s events.
“Sanzo,” Goku hesitated. “If that had been me, what would….. Ah, never mind, forget that I asked.”
Goku started walking.
“I would’ve killed you,” said Sanzo.
“What?” Goku turned.
“And I wouldn’t hold back.”
Goku looked at Sanzo meaningfully. “I see….”
The four of them trudged on in the snow. There was an awkward silence.
“Damn, the bottom of my feet feel sticky,” said Gojyo.
“Maybe it’s frostbite?” suggested Hakkai.
“Eeee! Stay away! I don’t want my feet to be sticky!” cried Goku.
“Frostbite’s not contagious you dumb monkey…” said Sanzo
